Once, Chalun was known as “the inner-eyed,” a talented shaman of the Sheynar’s Four-Faced God. However, Chalun was cursed and cast out from the Siso clan of the Shinomen for the murder of Achcha, as she slept. Achcha had been a rival priestess, against whom Chalun had competed for the attention of Kyshaso, a mighty warrior of the Four-Faced God’s Aspect of Wrath, Kyshastravedra. When Kyshaso learned of Chalun’s cowardly deed he took her from his bed to be judged before the Samadhina, deathless ancestral spirits. In revenge for her, a coward, touching him and sullying his embodiment as a warrior, Kyshaso called upon Kyshastravedra and cursed her so that no one would ever touch her again. The curse transformed her into a medusa and she was banished naked from the clan.
Robbed of her future-sight, Chalun wandered for decades, hiding in the foothills of the Cruth Mountains. Locals called her the Snake-Ghost, but Chalun lived alone and never took the name as her own. Miserable, she prayed aloud every night (too shamed to do so by day) until one day her prayers were heard. It was not her god who answered, but a Babau demon-spirit which had been summoned by her hate and despair filled prayers.
The demon offered to return to her the future-sight which she had been robbed of if she washed herself in the mud of the Daul Swamp and devoted her soul to the spirit of Wrath. Cruelly ironic is that without her future-sight she could not have known that the demon meant to fill her soul with the wrath of the Abyss, not the holy wrath of Kyshastravedra. Chalun acceded to the demons wishes and traveled south to the Great Daul Swamp.
Guided by the Babau, she washed herself in the mud of the Daul Swamp, in the place that the demon led her to. As she bathed her toe was stubbed upon a sharp stone hidden in the mud. She reached into the swamp-water and from it lifted a rusty iron box, a hand-span square on each side and decorated with strange symbols. The demon did not need to even bid her to open it, her curiosity was enough to break the ancient seal, revealing a strange ivory mask. Tendrils of ancient magic wrapped themselves about her arms, forcing her to draw the mask to her face where it was bound to her, evil burrowing deep into her soul. Within moments she was transformed into undeath, changed into a terrible vampire creature.
When Chalun awoke, she no longer was ashamed of her crimes and a fresh cunning malice directed her every action. She became a terror of communities which dwelt on the fringes of the Daul Swamp. After a year of this terrorism, adventurers drove her out of the swamps and southward to the City of Hana. There, her spirit found a weak, yet numerous populace that was largely unprotected by its uncaring and selfish leaders.
Before daylight could reveal her to the populace, she found passage into one of the massive sepif, mighty stone structures on which the ruling class of Hana dwell. There, she intended to plot her rise to power. However, fate intervened for the catacombs that she had intruded into were the lair of an ancient undead wizard, Erin.
The lich discovered Chalun as she slept and so it sent its minions to capture her. Chalun was a powerful adversary though and easily defeated her would-be captors; so Erin went to her and with magic brought Chalun under its dominion. Erin then cut a fragment of the mask away and placed it in a magical vessel, with which he would be able to eternally command Chalun’s services. Thus, she became a slave to Erin for many years.
Given eternal life, Chalun slowly tired of existence. To busy her idle mind and hands she turned to art work. First experimenting with painting, which she possessed a natural talent at, but without a mentor she reached a plateau of skill and eventually turned to other artistic expressions. Fascinated with her ability to turn flesh to stone, she briefly dabbled with arranging her victims as befit her artistic sense. It was not long before she turned her hands to sculpture, attempting to mimic the perfection with which her gaze could petrify, but her skill in sculpture was mediocre at best. Her attempts to sculpt her petrified victims were an even less successful, only illustrating to her an expansive lack of skill. With centuries perhaps she would have changed all that.
However, this was not to be. Adventurers in pursuit of a relic called the Fotis Mantle learned that Chalun has petrified its last owner. They sought out her lair and in a great battle slew Chalun. Before she could seek the sanctuary of her coffin, Kyshastravedra, Shinomen god of Wrath, sent its avatar to claim her soul. It appeared in a flash of fire and snatched Chalun's soul to the underworld, saying, "Chalun, how you disappoint me. Despair, for now you shall suffer cruelly in death, as life was not cruel enough for your evil."
